I've being seeing these weird ratings for fic lately, like FRAO, FRC and FRT, and I had no freaking idea what the hell they stood for. I JUST found out that they stand for "Fan (or Fic, apparently) Rated... Adults Only, Children, Teen" etc.

Um, what is the point of this? Do people not understand old-fashioned ratings like PG, R, NC-17 and the like? Or the European versions thereof? It seems like change just for change sake, and we all know how I feel about that. Does anybody know where this convention came from and why?
